What You Get From Car Warranties

Choosing whether or not to purchase a warranty when buying a car is an important decision. Some of this depends on the level of comfort you feel you get from a warranty. Warranties are usually an added cost when purchasing a car, especially when buying a used car.

Most new cars today come with a three-year, bumper-to-bumper warranty. Buying an extended warranty means that you may have your car covered past the three-year time frame. These extended warranties are usually quite expensive. Some people like the added peace of mind a warranty can offer. Be sure though to read the fine print of the warranty and what is actually covered.

Buying a used car can be a gamble in the first place. Purchasing a warranty from a used car dealer can be expensive also. Again, some enjoy the comfort of having it as it covers many possible issues. However, read the fine print on these warranties as well.

Some warranties cover “power train” which generally includes only the engine and transmission. Other warranties may claim to be “bumper-to-bumper” and not actually cover all items on your vehicle. Be price-conscience when looking at warranties. Pay attention to the term “limited warranty” and be sure to learn what is or is not covered.

Just like insurance policies, a warranty is a good thing if you need it and may be a waste of money if you do not ever need it. Decide for yourself if the peace of mind that a warranty can provide is important to you.
